Printable Italian Cryptograms

Cryptograms are a different kind of Italian puzzle. Each one hides a quote behind a simple letter-and-number code, so the words reveal themselves gradually as you work out which letter belongs to each number.

The printable cryptograms here feature quotes from well-known figures from Italian and Roman history. Some words may be unfamiliar at first, but that’s part of the challenge: as more letters fall into place, you can use the words you recognise and the meaning of the sentence to help uncover the rest.

These puzzles are probably best suited to intermediate learners, but there’s no reason not to try one earlier. Optional hints are there if you need a little help, and every puzzle comes with a downloadable solution, so there’s no pressure to solve everything unaided.

And there’s a little more to discover once the puzzle is finished. Each page takes a closer look at the person behind the quote and picks out something interesting in the Italian itself.

This collection is still growing, so it’s worth popping back now and then to see what’s been added.
