The aim of this lesson is to learn some Italian words related to the Christmas Season.
Quando pensiamo al Natale, spesso ci sentiamo investiti da tante emozioni. Possiamo provare gioia all’idea di ritrovarci tutti insieme in famiglia a festeggiare. Ci entusiasma l’idea di comprare dei regali per i nostri cari. Se non lo lasciamo all’ultimo minuto si intende – quanto poi l’entusiasmo si trasforma in stress.
When we think about Christmas (Natale), we often feel struck by many emotions (emozioni). We can feel joy (gioia) at the thought all the family (famiglia) getting together to celebrate (festeggiare). We are enthusiastic about the idea of buying gifts (regali) for our loved ones. If we don’t leave it to the last minute, that is – when much enthusiasm (entusiasmo) can turn into stress.
A seconda dei ricordi che abbiamo, ci può capitare di provare nostalgia per i tempi passati, e perfino quel pizzico di tristezza per le persone care che non sono più con noi. Queste emozioni variano anche nelle diverse fasi della vita.
Depending on the memories (ricordi) we have, we may feel nostalgia (nostalgia) for the past, and even that little bit of sadness (tristezza) for the loved ones who are no longer with us. These emotions also vary at different stages of life.
Da bambini sembra tutto un po’ più magico, credo. C’è l’attesa, mista alla curiosità, di ciò che succede durante la notte del 24 dicembre, mentre dormiamo. Poi la sorpresa dei regali sotto l’albero di Natale, che non vediamo l’ora di scartare. Poi la gioia del trascorrere la giornata in compagnia di grandi e piccini, mentre si gioca, ci si rilassa e si mangiano tante cose buone.
As children it all seems a bit more magical (magico), I think. There is the anticipation, mixed with curiosity, of what happens during the night of December 24th, while we are asleep. Then the surprise (sorpresa) of the presents (regali) under the Christmas tree (albero di Natale), which we can’t wait to unwrap. Then the joy of spending the day in the company of adults and children, while playing, relaxing and eating lots of nice food.
Quando ero bambina, una delle attività che segnava l’arrivo del Natale era la preparazione del presepe. Mio babbo ci portava a fare una passeggiata in montagna a cercare il muschio che poi stendevamo su un tavolo come base del presepe. Poi cominciava il vero divertimento: uno dei miei fratelli piazzava le pecorelle coi pastori, un altro montava la capanna dove sarebbe nato Gesù Bambino, io o mia sorella preparavamo il cielo con un cartone blu e le stelle dorate. Naturalmente la scena del presepe cambiava di continuo. Ogni giorno quando ci passavo davanti dovevo spostare la posizione di qualche personaggio. E misteriosamente, qualcuno, dopo lo rimetteva al posto originale.
When I was a child, one of the activities that marked the arrival of Christmas was the preparation of the nativity scene (presepe or presepio). My dad would take us for a walk in the mountains to look for moss (muschio), which we would then lay on a table as the base. Then the real fun began: one of my brothers would place the sheep (pecorelle or pecore) with the shepherds (pastori), another one would mount the hut (capanna) where baby Jesus (Gesù Bambino) would be born, my sister or I would prepare the sky (cielo) with a blue cardboard and golden stars (stelle). Of course, the scene of the nativity was constantly changing. Every day when I walked past it I had to move the position of one of the figures. And mysteriously, someone would then put it back in its original place.
Col tempo, come siamo cresciuti, il presepe è diventato sempre più complesso. Una volta abbiamo aggiunto il pozzo per attingere l’acqua, un’altra volta un fiume con il ponticello, un’altra volta il carro con la legna. Per non parlare degli animali. Si era cominciato con un semplice asinello e bue, che dentro la mangiatoia facevano compagnia a Gesù, Giuseppe e Maria. Poi col tempo sono arrivate più pecorelle, le oche, il cavallo, le galline e perfino una capra. Insomma con gli anni il presepe era stato trasformato in un’attiva fattoria. Per l’Epifania poi, arrivavano i Re Magi, con i loro doni. E questi completavano la scena.
Over time, as we grew up, the nativity became increasingly complex. Once we added a well (pozzo) to draw water, another time a river (fiume) with a bridge (ponte), another time a cart (carro) with wood (legna). Not to mention the animals (animali). It had started with a simple donkey (asino) and ox (bue), which inside the manger (mangiatoia) kept Jesus, Joseph and Mary company. Then, with time, more sheep, geese (oche), the horse (cavallo), hens (galline) and even a goat (capra) arrived. In short, over the years the crib had been transformed into an active farm (fattoria). Then, for the Epiphany (Epifania, celebrated on the 6th of January), the Three Kings (Re Magi) arrived with their gifts (doni). And they completed the scene.
C’era però anche il presepe vivente che ci teneva impegnati. Questo coinvolgeva tanti bambini e ragazzi e ognuno aveva la sua parte. Io una volta ero un angelo, di quelli che non parlava. Questo mi stava bene in quanto quando ero piccola, odiavo imparare le frasi a memoria. Una volta ho fatto la parte dell’oste che diceva a Giuseppe che non c’era posto per la notte. I miei fratelli pure avevano avuto vari ruoli, chi San Giuseppe, chi il pastorello, chi l’angelo Gabriele.
But there was also the Christmas Play (presepe vivente) that kept us busy. This involved many children and young teenagers and everyone had their role. I was once an angel (angelo), one of those who did not speak. This was good for me because when I was little, I hated learning my lines by heart. Once I played the part of the innkeeper (oste) who told Joseph that there was no room for the night. My brothers also had various roles, St. Joseph, the shepherd boy, or the angel Gabriel.

Una volta la Suora che organizzava sempre le recite ha proposto di fare un presepe vivente coi costumi tradizionali della Sardegna. Eccetto Maria e Giuseppe. Non solo, la Suora ha voluto che durante la scena coi pastorelli ci fosse un vero agnellino. Quindi grazie ad un pastore vero del mio paese, il giorno della recita, noi bambini eravamo super eccitati all’idea di avere un agnellino vivo tra di noi. Dietro le quinte lo accarezzavamo e gli facevamo le coccole. E litigavamo per chi lo doveva tenere.
One time the Sister who always organized the performances (recite) proposed we should do a Christmas Play wearing the traditional costume of Sardinia. Except for Mary and Joseph. Not only that, the Sister wanted there to be a real lamb (agnello or agnellino) during the scene with the shepherds. So thanks to a real shepherd from my village, on the day of the play, we children were super excited to have a little live lamb among us. Behind the scenes we stroked him and cuddled him. And we would fight over who was going to hold him.
Poi ecco la scena coi pastori: si apre il sipario e si vedono i pastori addormentati, sdraiati sul palco che era stato coperto con dell’erba . C’è una dolce musica di sottofondo e tutti aspettano che appaia l’angelo che deve annunciare ai pastori che è nato Gesù. In quel momento invece entra in scena l’agnello. Non è chiaro se è scappato da dietro le quinte o se è arrivato il suo momento da attore. L’agnellino comincia a passeggiare fra i pastori addormentati, che proprio addormentati non sono. In quanto, sentono l’agnello belare, e anche se hanno gli occhi chiusi, in realtà stanno ridacchiando.
Then comes the scene (scena) with the shepherds: the curtain (sipario) opens and we see the shepherds asleep, lying on the stage (palco) which had been covered with some grass (erba). There is gentle music in the background and everyone is waiting for the angel (angelo) to appear to announce (annunciare) to the shepherds that Jesus was born. In that moment the lamb enters the stage. It is not clear if he has escaped from behind the scenes or if his moment as an actor (attore) has arrived. The little lamb begins to walk among the sleeping shepherds, who are not really asleep. It’s clear that they can hear the lamb bleating (belare), and even though their eyes are shut, they are actually giggling.
Io sono seduta per terra, di fronte al palco, perché in quel momento non ho nessun ruolo. Osservo con curiosità l’agnellino che cammina in modo un po’ nervosetto. Il suo belare è dolcissimo e mi fa sorridere. Ma lui non sembra proprio a suo agio, cammina avanti e indietro e poi decide, nel bel mezzo del palco, di fare la pipì…
I am sitting on the floor, in front of the stage (palco), because at that moment I have no role (ruolo) to play. I watch with curiosity the little lamb a he nervously walks about. His bleating is very sweet and makes me smile. But he doesn’t seem at ease, he walks back and forth and then decides, in the middle of the stage, to do a pee…
I pastori non si sono accorti di niente, in quanto stanno ‘dormendo’. Ma dalla sala si sente un forte “Oooh!!!” I genitori e noi bambini scoppiamo a ridere. C’è un bel trambusto e la Suora, imbarazzata, chiude il sipario, prima della fine della scena.
Tra tutti i presepi viventi ai quali ho partecipato, questo è quello che ricordo meglio di tutti. Anche se non ricordo bene ciò che è successo dopo.
The shepherds have not noticed anything, as they are ‘sleeping’. But from the back you can hear a loud “Oooh!!!” The parents (genitori) and us children burst out laughing. There is quite a commotion and the Sister, embarrassed, closes the curtain before the end of the scene.
Of all the Christmas plays I have taken part in, this is the one I remember most. Although I don’t really remember what happened afterwards.
La vigilia di Natale era sempre speciale. Dopo aver cenato andavamo dai miei nonni. Non avevano una casa molto grande, e la sala da pranzo era sempre piena di cugini, zii e altri parenti. I grandi parlavano di cose da grandi e noi piccoli giocavamo insieme, spesso a carte. C’era sempre un lungo tavolo imbandito, con caramelle, noci, mandarini, torrone e dolci vari. Non poteva mancare il panettone, che io non mangiavo perché odiavo l’uvetta. Però mi rifacevo col pandoro, così soffice e delicato. Al momento di aprire lo spumante, noi bambine ci nascondevamo sotto il tavolo, per paura di essere colpite dal tappo. Visto che chiunque apriva la bottiglia, pensava sempre di agitarla per bene prima.
Christmas Eve (vigilia di Natale) was always special. After dinner we would go to my grandparents (nonni). They didn’t have a very big house, and the dining room was always full of cousins (cugini), uncles (zii) and other relatives (parenti). The grown-ups talked about grown-up things and we kids played together, often at cards (carte). There was always a long table set with candies (caramelle), walnuts (noci), mandarins (mandarini), nougat (torrone) and various sweets (dolci). We could not do without the panettone, which I did not eat because I hated sultanas (uvetta). But I made up for it with pandoro, so soft and delicate. When we opened the sparkling wine (spumante), we girls hid under the table, for fear of being hit by the cork. Since whoever opened the bottle, always thought of giving it a good shake first.

Se riuscivo a non addormentarmi prima, mi piaceva andare alla Messa di mezzanotte. L’atmosfera nella chiesa era magica: l’odore dell’incenso, le luci delle candele, i canti natalizi, e il rosso delle stelle di Natale che addobbavano l’altare. Però quella Messa era molto lunga… una volta che ci sedevamo sui banchi e cominciava la predica mi veniva un sonno irresistibile. Per quanto mi dessi dei pizzicotti sui gomiti e cercassi di stare sveglia, alla fine mi addormentavo sempre. Era un’atmosfera così magica e rilassante, quasi da sogno. Cosa potevo farci?
If I managed not to fall asleep, I used to like to go to Midnight Mass (Messa di mezzanotte). The atmosphere in the church (chiesa) was magical: the smell of incense (incense), the light of the candles (candele) the Christmas carols (canti di Natale), and the red of the poinsettias (stelle di Natale) decorating the altar (altare). But that Mass was very long… once we sat down in the pews and the sermon (predica) began, I would start to feel extremely sleepy. No matter how much I pinched my elbows and tried to stay awake, I would always fall asleep in the end. It was such a magical and relaxing atmosphere, almost dreamlike. What could I do about it?
Col passare degli anni i Natali sono diventati un po’ diversi. I nostri nonni sono venuti a mancare, i nostri genitori hanno cominciato a invecchiare, e noi figli abbiamo formato le nostre rispettive famiglie. E la magia del Natale è stata tramandata ai nostri figli e nipoti.
Over the years, our Christmases became a little different. Our grandparents passed away, our parents started to get older, and we, daughters and sons (figlie and figli) formed our respective families. And the magic of Christmas was passed on to our children and nephews/nieces (nipoti).
Eravamo noi ora quelli che correvano da una parte all’altra a fare le compere, cucinare, preparare la casa. Noi, che insieme ai bambini preparavamo l’albero, addobbandolo con le palline e varie decorazioni. Stava a noi incartare i regali di nascosto e farli trovare sotto l’albero. Mentre, giustamente, era anche arrivato il tempo per i nostri genitori di fare un po’ di meno e rilassarsi e godersi in pieno le festività.
We were now the ones running around, doing the shopping, cooking, preparing the house. It was us, who, together with our children, prepared the tree (albero), with baubles (palline) and various decorations (decorazioni). It was our turn to secretly wrap (incartare) the presents (regali) and place them under the tree. While, rightly so, it was also time for our parents to do a little less and relax and fully enjoy the festivities (festività).
Il Natale non è solo per gli esseri umani. Ecco Phoebe, la nostra gattina, che adora arrampicarsi sugli alberi.
