A little Italian for a slow summer afternoon.
There’s something wonderfully Italian about the quietest part of a hot summer day, when the streets empty, the shutters are half-closed and life slows right down. That slower rhythm is especially familiar in southern Italy, where the afternoon heat encourages everyone to take things piano piano.
This puzzle borrows that atmosphere. The words you’ll find describe the sounds, feelings and little moments of an Italian afternoon, from brezza and frescura to pennichella, silenzio and quiete.
Find each Italian word in the grid. Words can run in any direction: left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, or diagonally.
When you’ve finished, perhaps you’ll find yourself slowing down a little too.
Divertiti! 😊

My favourite word from this puzzle ☀️
Ozio can sometimes mean idleness or laziness, but it also has an older, richer meaning that Italians have never quite lost. It can describe a period of quiet, rest or free time, away from work and obligations. That's the sense I love, and perhaps why oziare is one of my favourite Italian verbs.
If this unhurried pace is your kind of pace, you'll find many more everyday Italian moments in my puzzle book Home and Family.
And if you're curious about the memory behind this puzzle, I've written more about it in Fighting Over the Last Fan, a true story about growing up in Sardinia and the slow summer afternoons that inspired it.
